Standing Together: Supporting YMCA Communities Affected by California Wildfire
At the Whatcom YMCA, we’ve been moved by the devastating news of the California wildfires and their impact on our fellow YMCA associations and communities. The destruction and upheaval have touched the lives of so many, including YMCA staff, members, and neighbors in the affected regions. As a Y family, we believe in coming together to support one another in times of crisis.
The YMCA’s Role in Supporting Impacted Communities
YMCA associations in and around the Los Angeles area—including YMCA of Metro Los Angeles, YMCA of the Foothills, and Southeast Ventura County YMCA—are stepping up to provide vital support. Their facilities have transformed into lifelines for their communities:
- Evacuation and Relief Centers: Providing shelter, showers, and mental health support for displaced individuals and families.
- Child Care Services: Offering free childcare for first responders, essential workers, and families affected by the fires.
- Emergency Support Hubs: Acting as staging areas for emergency vehicles and supply distribution.
- Donation Centers: Collecting and distributing essentials like food, water, and clothing.
How You Can Help
Together, we can make a difference for those impacted by these devastating wildfires. Here’s how you can lend your support:

A Message of Hope and Resilience
The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles CEO, Victor Dominguez, beautifully articulated the strength of the Y during this time of need, stating, “The Y is not just a place—it’s a family. When our family hurts, we come together to heal and rebuild.”
This message resonates with us at the Whatcom YMCA as we stand in solidarity with our colleagues and communities in California.
