RECLAIM YOUR ENERGY, RECLAIM YOUR POWER
By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body. If you are interested in participating, or simply learning more about the next session, please email Karrie Inman, Healthy Living Director, kinman@whatcomymca.org.
Program Structure:
LiveStrong is a 12 week program with two 90-minute sessions per week. In this supportive environment you’ll ease back into exercise which includes cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance and flexibility with the support of YMCA certified instructors. Class starts with a check-in, then you will workout in our Wellness Center, and ends with a group balance and stretching session. Occasionally, we bring in guest speakers as an opportunity to learn more about wellness. Participants get the most of the program when they can attend the majority of sessions. Each week is a progression so if you will be away or need to miss several sessions, then it may be best to wait for a future program session. We hold LiveStrong sessions in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. We do require a medical clearance from your doctor to ensure the program is a safe fit. That form will be given after registration.
Fall Dates:
September 30 - December 18: Monday/Wednesday, Time: 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
There is no evening session for the fall. We hope to return to having an evening session in the winter.
Registration has opened for new participants. Space is limited. Email Karrie Inman kinman@whatcomymca.org to see if there is availability.
“When I came to LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, it was with awareness that I could no longer do my highly active job. I felt my treatment-damaged muscles were ruined forever. But at the end of the 12 weeks, I was able to do a few hours a week. After a second 12 weeks, I was strong enough to accept as much work as I wanted to.” –Whatcom Family Y LIVESTRONG participant
History
The YMCA began serving survivors in 2011 with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center's program, Exercise & Thrive.
In 2016, we started using the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA curriculum. This evidence-based program continues to fulfill the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their "new normal."
