Small in Stature, Bigger than Life
Barb Macklow, an inspiration to many
Whatcom County's very own Barb Macklow was an inspiration to so many, and far beyond Whatcom County. The diminutive yet determined Barb, after raising a large family and while serving the community as an RN, began embracing her athletic self and took on challenges big and small. Sailing, mountain climbing, competing in triathlons, kayaking and biking were among her many endeavors.
At the age of 51 she began running and became a force. If you have attended foot races in the area in the last few decades, you might remember a tiny woman standing on the podium receiving one of her many age group awards. Those awards represent more than local records.
Barb set many American and world records, including her crowning achievement of setting the world record for running 100 miles at the age of 82 - no person, male or female, had completed that distance over the age of 80 until Barb came along.
Everyone I know who met Barb was inspired to be their best selves. One time I told her that I wanted to be like her when I grew up. She said, "Do it now! What are you waiting for?"
Barb has left us, but she has also left a legacy of strength and inspiration. With that, we'd like to announce the Barb Macklow Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will enable Whatcom County children to participate in our youth running programs at the Y when financial barriers may be in their way.
Thanks Barb, for inspiring us to try new things, work hard and do our very best.
