Girls on the Run is Expanding in Whatcom County
Meet the Girls on the Run Nooksack Elementary Team!
Girls on the Run has expanded immensely over the last 18 years that it has been in Whatcom County. This year, Nooksack Elementary joined in on the fun and started a team of their own. The excitement was shown for the program when over 20 girls joined the new team.
On this day at Nooksack Elementary, the girls focused on learning about community and working together to accomplish different goals. One activity was a relay race where each girl had to run to get a different piece of a puzzle. Then once all pieces were collected, they used teamwork to put the pieces all together. The girls were so proud once they completed their goal of putting the puzzle together.
Combining physical exercise while also working on teambuilding and learning is something Girls on the Run focuses on. Every time each girl on the Nooksack team would complete two laps around the gym, they would stop and write down a community that they were a part of. These could include their families, clubs, churches, sports and much more. It really showed how many communities each girl had in their lives.
By joining Girls on the Run, girls from all different backgrounds get to come together and empower each other to meet their goals. Nooksack Elementary’s team coaches hope to continue to teach these girls while also providing a safe and fun space for an after-school activity.
There are many different reasons why each girl on the Nooksack Elementary team decided to join the Girls on the Run program.
“I wanted to join Girls on the Run to meet new people and make new friends.”
“‘I wanted to do something new.”
“I wanted to get faster and I’m finally getting faster than what I used to be.”
“I wanted to get more active.”
“I wanted to become a better person.”
