The Whatcom Family YMCA’s Campbell Phillips Elected as Youth Governor for Washington State’s Youth Legislature

The Whatcom Family YMCA is proud to announce that Campbell Phillips, a member of its Youth and Government (YAG) delegation, has been elected Youth Governor for the State of Washington’s 78th Youth Legislature. Campbell’s election is a remarkable achievement, especially as he is the second Youth Governor from the Whatcom YMCA delegation in the past five years, a testament to the program's commitment to cultivating strong, capable youth leaders.

Campbell, who has been involved with YAG for several years, will be responsible for leading the student-run legislative process throughout the year. His goals as Youth Governor include creating inclusive spaces for youth to discuss critical issues, increasing public awareness of the YAG program, and introducing ranked-choice voting to improve the democratic process within the organization.

In his own words, Campbell shared:
“I’m honored to serve the Washington Youth Legislature and excited to work with young people across the state. This position is a unique opportunity to highlight the impact that youth can have on our society. I hope to create spaces where we can lead important discussions and inspire others to take part in shaping the future.”

One of Campbell’s key roles as Youth Governor will be planning the Governor’s Ball at the annual session in Olympia this May, a tradition that is eagerly anticipated by delegates from across the state.

Christian Moulaison, YAG Advisor, highlighted the significance of Campbell's election, saying:
“Campbell’s election as Youth Governor is a testament to his exceptional leadership and commitment to the YAG program. Despite being part of a smaller delegation, his determination and skill set allowed him to rise to the top. His ability to inspire and lead by example will have a lasting impact not only on our delegation but on the entire state program.”

Having a second Youth Governor from Whatcom in such a short span speaks to the strength and success of the YMCA’s Youth and Government program. Campbell’s election reflects the YMCA’s mission to nurture young leaders who are prepared to make a difference. His leadership and vision align with the Y’s values of youth development and civic engagement, empowering future generations to take on leadership roles in their communities.
